Spray on Paper #15 1956-57, acrylic and aerosol paint on paper, 12.5 x 19" Collection Barbara & Janet Liles
1950s France - Works on Paper
In France in the 50s, Liles produces a series of abstractions of almost calligraphic simplicity using aerosol paint combined with brushed and splattered paint on paper. Working quickly, over templates on the floor, after his day job as an engineer, Liles creates hundreds of images, a body of work that is a diary of expressionistic experimentation. His use of metallic and spray paint anticipates aspects of the graffiti art of the 1980s, yet has a zen-like clarity.
"There has been a consistent striving for immediacy and an economy of means, as well as, elements of humor, playfulness and whimsy."
